Rebels Tied for 11th
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss' Julia Johnson paced the Rebels on a rain-soaked day one at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship on Monday, as the preseason ranked No. 27 Ole Miss women's golf team currently sits in a tie for 11th place overall.
Johnson, a sophomore from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, followed up a Round 1 77 with a team-best 1-over par 73 to lead the way for the Rebels. Johnson was particularly good on the par 5s through the first 36 holes, going 3-under on the day on those holes. She's currently tied for 21st place on the leaderboard.
After a Round 1 311, the Rebels rebounded with a team score of 297 in Round 2 later in the day.
"Today was a tough start to our season," said head coach Kory Henkes. "We made too many mental mistakes and errors around the greens. In order to compete at the highest level we have to learn from these mistakes and get better from them.
"It was promising to see a bounce back and better golf on the second round today. We look forward to giving it our best effort tomorrow."
Senior Kie Purdom leads the team in birdies with six, while Conner Beth Ball leads in pars with 26, including a string of nine straight to close out the second round.
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, in her first collegiate tournament, is tied for 28th, and had the second best round of the day for the team with a second round 73 (+2).
Ole Miss will tee off Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start for the final 18 holes. The Rebels will be paired with Chattanooga and BYU.
