Ole Miss Clips South Alabama 2-1 in Mobile
9/2/2018 | Soccer
MOBILE, Ala. – Ole Miss (5-1) came out flying, scoring a pair of goals inside of 11 minutes, and held on late to thwart South Alabama's (2-3) comeback attempt, defeating the Jaguars 2-1 Sunday afternoon at The Cage.
Right from the opening kick, Ole Miss was on the front foot. The quick start paid off as Channing Foster was able to drive in from the right wing and fire in a shot off of USA keeper Justice Stanford's outstretched hand and into the back of the net.
Less than five minutes later, South Alabama was picking the ball out of the back of its net again. The attack once again came from the right wing, as Mary Kate Smith sent in a dangerous ball from out wide, with the ball looping over Stanford's head, inside the post and into the side netting.
The Rebels continued to press forward throughout the rest of the opening 45 minutes but were unable to produce the final ball, settling for a two-goal lead heading into the break.
The second half was a much more evenly-played affair and just seven minutes in, the Jaguars took advantage of an Ole Miss miscue to halve the deficit. The Rebels turned the ball over attempting to play out from the back, leading to a Moa Ohman goal from the center of the box.
South Alabama threw numbers forward in an attempt to find the equalizer in the closing minutes of the match but the Rebel defense was able to hold on, thwarting the comeback attempt and securing the victory for Ole Miss.
Ole Miss will remain on the road next week, heading to Fayetteville, Arkansas for a pair of neutral-site matches against UConn and FAU Friday and Sunday, respectively.
