Thornberry Set to Defend Title
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ole Miss men's golf team will travel to Alabama for the Shoal Creek Invitational (Sept. 24-25). The two-day event will be played at the Shoal Creek Country Club, which will be playing 7,300 yards and par 72.
The 14-team field consists of the host team UAB, Georgia Southern, High Point, Kansas, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Lipscomb, Louisiana Tech, North Florida, Samford, South Alabama, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Ole Miss.
The Rebels will get a first look at SEC opponents in Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
Head coach Chris Malloy will be taking seven Rebels to the event. Braden Thornberry will be in the No. 1 position, followed by Jackson Suber, Charlie Miller, Cecil Wegener, and Josh Seiple. Jack Gnam and Chip Getz will be competing as individuals. Suber and Miller return to the lineup after making their collegiate debuts in the season-opening Ocean Course Invitational. With the help of a final round 67 (-5), Suber finished runner-up and led the Rebels to a fourth place finish.
"We are looking forward to getting back into competition this week," said Malloy. "This will be the first of three tournaments in a row, so we would like to ride a wave of momentum into the next two weeks as well. Our guys like this golf course, and I fully expect us to have a great week."
The Rebels finished tied for fourth last year at Shoal Creek, with Thornberry a medalist. The No. 1 amateur in the world turned in a 9-under par (71-66-70-207) performance to pass Dave Peege for the most individual tournament titles in Ole Miss Men's Golf history.
First round begins Monday morning with split tee times starting at 7:20 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with players from UAB and Vanderbilt.
