Birdies Rain for Rebels on Misty Day at Erin Hills

Four Rebels in Top-11 Individually
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – It was a chilly, rainy day at Erin Hills but that didn't stop the Ole Miss men's golf team from coming out swinging. Four Rebels are in the top-11 individually after the first 18 holes of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, one of the toughest courses in America.
Ole Miss shot a first round 290 (+2) and sit four shots back of first place Northwestern. The six Rebels competing combined for 19 birdies throughout the opening round.
Cecil Wegener fired a first round 2-under 70 with the help of a team-high five birdies. Wegener shined on the par 5's, going 2-under on the day.
Josh Seiple, competing as an individual, shot a season-best 70, including a 2-under 34 on the front nine with seven pars and two birdies. Seiple led the field in par 3 scoring with a pair of deuces to play the short holes at 2-under.
Braden Thornberry sits tied for seventh. The senior shot a 1-under 71 with four birdies to counter three bogeys.
Jackson Suber used a team-high 12 pars to post an even par 72 in round one.
"We were close to putting together a good team score today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Unfortunately, we were one score shy. We still have two rounds left and are only four strokes off the lead, so we are in a good position."
