9/7/2018 | Men's Golf
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Ole Miss men's golf team will travel to South Carolina for the Ocean Course Invitational (Sept. 9-11) to open up their fall season. The three-day event will be played at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, host of the 2021 PGA Championship, which will be playing 7,324 yards and par 72.
The 14-team field consists of the host team College of Charleston, Akron, Charleston Southern, Elon, Francis Marion, George Mason, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, High Point, James Madison, Maryland, SMU, Western Carolina, and Ole Miss.
Head coach Chris Malloy, who begins his fifth season leading the Ole Miss program, will be taking six Rebels to compete at the event. Braden Thornberry will play in the number one position, followed by Jackson Suber, Chip Getz, Charlie Miller and Josh Seiple. Cecil Wegener will compete as an individual.
The player to watch will be Thornberry, who returns for his senior season, and is currently the number one ranked amateur in the world.
Josh Seiple begins his fifth year in the program having competed in every team event last year, including a top-15 finish at the first tournament of the fall at Shoal Creek.
Chip Getz comes into his junior season having played in seven events with two top-20 finishes.
Freshmen Jackson Suber and Charlie Miller will be making their Rebel debuts this weekend.
"It's always exciting to start the season, but especially at a course like the Ocean Course at Kiawah," Malloy said. "This is a very impressive group of young men that we have, and I know that they have very high expectations for this year. I look forward to seeing how they come out of the gates and compete on a very challenging venue."
The Rebels opened up at the Ocean Course in 2016, whereThornberry's top-5 performance led the team to a second-place finish.
First round of stroke play begins Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
