Ole Miss Places Six in the Top 30 of USA Shooting Qualification on Tuesday
FORT BENNING, Ga. – The nation's best rifle athletes gathered for the first of four USA Shooting qualifiers to begin determination of who will represent Team USA, beginning with the 2019 Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore Part I on Tuesday.
Six current and former Ole Miss rifle athletes sit in the top 30. The top two women's smallbore finishers will represent USA Shooting in the event for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Pan American Gold Medalist and Women's Air Rifle National Team member Ali Weisz leads Ole Miss in the smallbore event with a 15th-place standing. Her current score of 1157 is within striking distance of first-place Ginny Thrasher (1171) and second-place Rachel Martin (1167). Both Thrasher and Martin are current members of the Smallbore National Team.
The rest of the current Rebels are grouped close together on the leaderboard. Junior Abby Buesseler (20th, 1143) and sophomore Erin Walsh (21st, 1142) sit directly in the middle of the 41-person field. Freshman Kristen Derting (25th, 1134), sophomore Jillian Zakrzeski (26th, 1133), and junior Kamilla Kisch (28th, 1130) follow close behind.
Competition resumes Wednesday morning at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit's Home of Champions. Scores from the first two days of qualification will be added to Part II, which is slated for March 29-31, 2020.
