Ole Miss Senior One of 20 on Watch List for Shooting Guard of the Year
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The preseason accolades continue to add up for Ole Miss men's basketball senior Breein Tyree. After being named Preseason All-SEC by the media earlier Tuesday morning, Tyree was selected to the watch list for the 2020 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its sixth year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
As the only senior on the team, Tyree enters his final season in an Ole Miss uniform ranked 29th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,187 points. He has drained 143 three-pointers in 99 games as a Rebel, which already ranks 11th in program history.
Tyree was named First Team All-SEC, USBWA (United State Basketball Writers Association) All-District IV and NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Second Team All-District a season ago to help Ole Miss exceed expectations and return to the NCAA Tournament. The SEC's leading returning scorer heading into this season, Tyree averaged 17.9 ppg as a junior to rank third in the conference. He bumped his scoring average to 19.1 ppg in conference play, increasing his output from non-conference to SEC action for the third consecutive year. Last season, Tyree was the only player in the SEC to rank in the conference's top 10 in scoring (3rd-17.9 ppg), free throw percentage (3rd-83.1), three-pointers made (7th-2.1 per game) and field goal percentage (10th-45.9).
Tyree recorded at least 20 points in 17 different games throughout the 2018-19 campaign. The Somerset, New Jersey, native scored a career-high 31 points in wins at Georgia (Feb. 9) and at Vanderbilt (Jan. 5). He also earned a spot on the Emerald Classic All-Tournament Team and was a finalist for the Howell Trophy (best college basketball player in the state of Mississippi).
New to the award this season is fan voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2020 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2020 Jerry West Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles on Friday, April 10, 2020, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Starting Five Fan Voting will go live on Friday, October 18.
Previous winners of the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award include RJ Barrett, Duke (2019), Carsen Edwards, Purdue (2018), Malik Monk, Kentucky (2017), Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (2016) and D'Angelo Russell, Ohio State (2015).
