Cotter Wilson Advances into ITA Regional Main Draw

Junior Won His Third ITA Regional Qualifying Match on Friday
AUBURN, Ala. – Needing a win to advance into the Main Draw of singles at the ITA Southern Regional Championships, junior Ole Miss Men's Tennis player Cotter Wilson delivered on Friday.
Wilson faced off with Tomas Descarrega of LSU at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Wilson, the Shreveport, La., product claimed the first set 6-4. Descarrega battled back needing an extra point to tie the match with a 7-5 decision. In the third set, Wilson earned his third win of the tournament with a 7-5 victory in his favor to move on.
Sophomores Jan Soren Hain, Simon Junk and Sebastian Rios all looked to reach the Main Draw after winning two matches each on Thursday.
Hain nearly pulled off a tremendous upset of Qualifying top seed Gregor Ramskogler. Hain grabbed the first set 7-5 over his Mississippi State foe. However, Ramskogler rebounded with 7-5 and 6-2 wins.
Junk also faced a rival Bulldog in Isaac Becroft. Becroft earned a 7-6(4) hard-fought tiebreaker for an early advantage. Junk was resilient in the second winning 6-3. The third set was finished off 6-4 by Becroft.
In the fourth Rebel matchup of the day, Rios challenged Oscar Michalek of Troy. Michalek claimed momentum early and did relinquish it, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Wilson joins senior Tim Sandkaulen and freshmen Lukas Engelhardt and Nikola Slavic in singles play on Saturday. Sandaulen is the tournament's top overall seed and owns a No. 25 ITA ranking.
Doubles Main Draw also begins on Saturday. Wilson teams up with Hain, rookies Engelhardt and Slavic enter as a duo, and Sandkaulen and Junk are the third Rebel pairing.
The regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
