Ole Miss Shoots Program Record 19-Under in First Round

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The No. 15 Ole Miss women's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Jim West Challenge on Sunday. The Rebels shot consecutive under par rounds, including a first round 19-under 269, the lowest single round total in program history and a tournament record to par. Ole Miss followed with a 5-under 283 in the second round, and are tied atop the leaderboard with No. 40 Texas Tech at 24-under.

Ole Miss leads the field in eagles, collecting six on the first day of competition, and in par-5 scoring (-28), through the first 36 holes. During the first round, the Rebels carded 23 birdies and five eagles alone.

"Today was another outstanding day for our program," head coach Kory Henkes said. "The team was firing on all cylinders this morning and posted a fantastic round. This afternoon, we played in windy conditions and continued to play solid golf. We were burning the edges of the cup this afternoon, so I know the team feels like they left a few shots out there. We look forward to teeing it up tomorrow."

Julia Johnson is tied for first after back-to-back rounds in the 60s (67-69—136). The junior bogeyed her first two holes on Sunday and never looked back, going bogey-free her next 32 holes. She carded nine birdies and an eagle until a miscue on her second-to-last hole. Johnson is 8-under for the tournament and leads the field of 78 in par 5 scoring (-8).

"I stayed really patient today and just let the birdies fall," Johnson said. "I started off bogey-bogey and just told myself to stay patient. My driver was really consistent, which set up a lot of birdie opportunities on par fives for me. Turning the par 5s into par 4s was a really big part of my day today. I'm going to keep the same mindset tomorrow and attack when I need to, but play smart golf."

Conner Beth Ball joins Johnson in the top five after going 68-69—137 (-7). The junior is right behind Johnson in par 5 scoring (-7), while carding two eagles to lead the team. Ball is second on the team in pars with 24.

"We had a lot of momentum as a team today, and it carried over into a great team score," Ball said. "The mindset going into tomorrow is to stay aggressive and have fun. This is a great course, and staying patient and waiting for our birdies to fall will be huge tomorrow."

Kennedy Swann fired a first round 6-under 66 to tie her career low, going bogey-free her last 16 holes with six birdies after starting birdie-bogey. The senior is in a tie for 12th after a second round 1-over 73, and leads the team in birdies with nine.

Ellen Hutchinson-Kay started 6-under through her first 11 holes with two birdies and two eagles during her first round 4-under 68. The sophomore shot a 4-over 76 during the second round and is tied for 39th overall (E).

Pi-Lillebi Hermansson went 73-72—145 (+1) and is in a tie for 43rd. The senior leads the team in pars with 26.

The final round begins Monday morning with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with Texas Tech and Miami (FL).
