Sophomore Goalkeeper is First Rebel in 2019 to Receive SEC Weekly Award
OXFORD, Miss. – After setting a new career high in saves during Ole Miss' 1-1 tie with Alabama on Thursday, Rebel goalkeeper Ashley Orkus has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.
It is the first SEC weekly award of Orkus' career, becoming the first Rebel in 2019 to be recognized by the conference as a player of the week.
Orkus was one of the key elements behind the Rebels earning an important point with the draw against the Crimson Tide. The sophomore made 10 saves in the match, including three in overtime. Even on Alabama's lone goal of the game, Orkus got a hand to the shot, nearly making a spectacular tip save.
Orkus became the first Rebel to record double digit stops in a match since Marnie Merritt made 10 saves at Texas A&M in 2017. Ole Miss has not had a keeper made more than 10 saves in a single match since Sarah Story tallied 11 against Arkansas in 2010.
Orkus and the Rebels play a pair of pivotal matches this week as the regular season winds down. Ole Miss travels to No. 7 South Carolina on Thursday before facing LSU in Oxford on Sunday.
