Ole Miss Head Soccer Coach Recaps South Carolina and LSU, Previews Texas A&M
Ole Miss Soccer Head Coach Matt Mott met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach Mott recapped this past week's loss at South Carolina and win against LSU before previewing Texas A&M.
Opening Statement
"We went to South Carolina last Thursday and took a 2-0 loss there. We played actually pretty well in the game. We went down by one about 17-minutes in and had a great chance to tie is up right before half, but their keeper saved it into the post. Then we battled and they got one late in the second half. So, we came back losing 2-0.
"Yesterday we had a great Senior Night against LSU. We scored early as Madison Smith scored the first one. We ended up getting four (goals) to win 4-0. Channing Foster scored, Haleigh Stackpole scored, and Mo O'Connor had a really good goal. The second goal from Mo was really well taken. I was really happy with the game. I thought we had a great offensive explosion which we really needed. It put us in a really good spot in the game to be up 4-0 at half. We played and defended really well. Took a few knocks in the game so hopefully we'll get some guys back.
"We turn our attention to Thursday against Texas A&M in College Station. They are obviously a very good team. They score a bunch of goals and are always very dangerous. We are hoping that will qualify us for The Beach. I think we are really close now, but there are so many tie breakers that I don't think anything is guaranteed at this point. There aren't any seedings guaranteed at any part of the league yet, and really the top-10 isn't decided yet. Everyone is still scrambling trying to get the points, so this is certainly a huge match for us Thursday at Texas A&M."
On Teams Position for the NCAA Tournament
"We are kind of right on the bubble. We have a really good win against Florida who is currently around 20 in the RPI, and a very good draw with Alabama. We don't have any bad losses. We're in a big mix of teams that have to finish out the season strong. I think we need at least one more win to put us in a very good spot, but we are certainly on the bubble at this point. If we could get a win a Texas A&M that would certainly lock us in to the NCAA's or if we can get something at The Beach that could put us in a good spot, depending on who we play and where they stand."
On Potential Positioning for the SEC Tournament
"It's funny… There's a three way tie at 12 points right now. Us, Georgia, and Auburn all have 12, but there's a chance that Tennessee and Mississippi State could get to 12 points as well. It all depends on what happens Thursday. It's going to be pretty neat. They are doing an SEC wrap-around on Thursday night. All seven game start within 15-minutes of each other so they will be in the studio going back-and-forth to each game. There's still questions about who's going to The Beach, who's going to win the league, so it will be a really neat four hours of coverage on the SEC Network going into each game."
