Johnson Swann Arnold Palmer Story

Johnson, Swann Named in First Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings

11/21/2019 | Women's Golf

Rebel Duo Ranked No. 11, 20 in First Round of Rankings

NORMAN, Okla. – Ole Miss women's golf stars Julia Johnson and Kennedy Swann have been named in the first rankings for selection to the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup.

The Arnold Palmer Cup, which was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America, is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players.

Johnson and Swann are in contention to be selected for the 2020 running of the tournament, which will be played July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland.

The top six golfers from the final rankings in the spring from both the United States and international men and women – 12 total golfers – will be among the 24 individuals selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer.

Using Golfstat's NCAA player rankings as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.

The remaining six men's and women's spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches' pick. The balance of the international team will include the men's and women's winners of The R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections and a coaches' pick.

The next Arnold Palmer Cup rankings will be announced Feb. 20. Johnson and Swann are ranked No. 11 and 20, respectively.

Johnson has had a sensational start to her junior year. Through the fall, the junior finished no worse than 13th place with two top-5s. She earned her third individual win of her career at the Battle at the Beach to close out the fall season, including a final round 11-under 61 which tied an NCAA record for lowest single round total.

Johnson is second in the conference in scoring (70.40) and went par-or-better in 12 of her 15 rounds including seven rounds in the 60s.

Swann finished no worse than a tie for 17th all fall, including her first individual win at the Illini Women's Invitational at Medinah going par or better in all three rounds with two rounds in the 60s. The senior ranks seventh in the conference in scoring (71.20).

The Rebels are in the middle of a winter break before returning to the course Feb. 17-18, for the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Florida.
