Ole Miss Suffers First Loss of the Season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In the first road game of the 2019-20 season, the Ole Miss men's basketball team suffered a narrow 87-86 defeat to No. 16 Memphis in a rowdy atmosphere Saturday afternoon (Nov. 23) in FedExForum. The Rebels (4-1) nearly overcame a 16-point second half deficit, but the nationally-ranked Tigers (5-1) escaped with a win on their home floor.
Memphis controlled the paint 52-20, while Ole Miss knocked down 12 threes throughout the contest. Senior guard Breein Tyree scored 24 points with four assists and four rebounds, while Blake Hinson added 15 points in his first action of the season. Hinson, after missing the four games due to injury, was 5 of 9 from the field which included going 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. KJ Buffen added 13 points and six rebounds before fouling out with 10 minutes left in the second half. After suffering foul trouble of his own in the first half, Khadim Sy bounced back with nine points in the final frame to set a new career high as a Rebel.
The Tigers were led by their frontcourt, as Precious Achiuwa (25 points) and D.J. Jeffries (23) combined for 48 points. Sophomore guard Alex Lomax added 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Memphis shot 51.7 percent from the floor against the fourth-best field goal percentage defense in the nation.
Tyree was the first Rebel on the court 90 minutes before tipoff, and it was the senior who got off to a hot start. Scoring seven of Ole Miss' first eight points, Tyree helped the red and blue jump out to an 8-4 advantage three minutes into the contest. Tyree and Buffen combined for the team's first 11 points before Blake Hinson drained a corner three on his first shot attempt of the season.
Memphis inched closer, and even tied the game, but Ole Miss maintained the lead with success from beyond the arc. However, the Tigers grabbed their first lead of the contest with a 6-0 run, flipping a three-point deficit into a three-point cushion the other way. The lead didn't last long as three second chance points courtesy of offensive rebounds by Hinson and Luis Rodriguez squared the contest at 31-31.
The game was knotted up before Memphis used a 7-0 run to take a 45-38 lead into the halftime break. Tyree and Buffen combined for 25 first half points, and the Rebels knocked down six 3-pointers. On the other end of the floor, Memphis found success down low with 28 points in the paint behind Achiuwa (13 points) and Jeffries (10 points).
Forcing Ole Miss to turn the ball over, the Tigers doubled up their halftime lead to 14, 60-46, with 12 minutes to go. At the 10:10 mark, the Rebels lost an important piece of their frontcourt as Buffen fouled out with 13 points and six rebounds, team highs at the time.
Making six straight free throws, the Rebels got back within single digit with six minutes remaining. Memphis made a bucket to push the lead back to double digits before a Sy three and two Tyree free throws sliced the margin in half, 70-65. The Tigers increased their advantage to eight with 42 second left, but Ole Miss continued to fight. Breein Tyree drove the lane and threw down a thunderous dunk with nine seconds on the clock to make it a two-point game, 84-82.
Memphis knocked down a free throw and a Jeffries dunk down the stretch to hang on to a one-point win.
Up next, Ole Miss heads to Brooklyn to compete in the NIT Tip-Off. The Rebels begin the tournament against Penn State. Tipoff from the Barclays Center is set for 4 p.m. CT on ESPN2. After enjoying Thanksgiving, Ole Miss will face either Syracuse or Oklahoma State on Friday. (Nov. 29).
