Coaches Select Tyree to First Team, Shuler to Second Team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The starting backcourt of the Ole Miss men's basketball team collected Preseason All-SEC honors Monday (Nov. 4). Selected by the conference's 14 head coaches, senior guard Breein Tyree (first team) and junior guard Devontae Shuler (second team) were projected to have an all-conference, 2019-20 season.
Ole Miss was one of five schools to have multiple selections, joining Florida, Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee. The coaches' preseason All-SEC first and second teams consist of a minimum of eight players on each squad, voted on by the SEC basketball coaches. No ties were broken and no predicted order of finish was made.
Tyree has earned a plethora of preseason honors entering his final season as a Rebel. The Somerset, New Jersey, native is one of 20 guards in the country to be named to the Jerry West Award Watch List, an honor annually given to the shooting guard of the year. The media also named Tyree Preseason First Team All-SEC, while Sporting News selected the Rebel as a Preseason Third Team All-American.
The SEC's leading returning scorer heading into this season, Tyree averaged 17.9 ppg as a junior to rank third in the conference. He bumped his scoring average to 19.1 ppg in conference play, increasing his output from non-conference to SEC action for the third consecutive year. Last season, Tyree was the only player in the SEC to rank in the conference's top 10 in scoring (3rd-17.9 ppg), free throw percentage (3rd-83.1), three-pointers made (7th-2.1 per game) and field goal percentage (10th-45.9). On his way to All-SEC honors last season, Tyree recorded at least 20 points in 17 different games. The Somerset, New Jersey, native scored a career-high 31 points in wins at Georgia (Feb. 9) and at Vanderbilt (Jan. 5).
Shuler had a breakout sophomore season under first year head coach Kermit Davis. Making the transition to point guard, he averaged 10.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg and 3.0 apg (second on team). The Irmo, South Carolina, native ranked sixth in the SEC with 1.7 steals per game and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.7). His 56 steals were the most ever by an Ole Miss sophomore, the seventh-most by any Rebel in a single season. Shuler had one of the nation's biggest increases in three-point field goal percentage, going from a 25.9 percent clip as a freshman to a team-best 40.2 percent a season ago. He also knocked down 82.3 percent (51 of 62) of his free throw attempts.
Tyree and Shuler lead the 2019-20 Rebels onto the floor for the first time this season later tonight. Ole Miss hosts Mississippi College in an exhibition contest with donations going towards The Bahamas' relief efforts following the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian. Tipoff from The Pavilion is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT. For updates throughout the game, follow the Rebels on Twitter at @OleMissMBB,
