JACKSON, Miss. – Junior forward Khadim Sy continued to step up his game, scoring a career-high 20 points to lead the Ole Miss men's basketball team past Southeastern Louisiana 83-76 Saturday afternoon at the Mississippi Coliseum. Sy scored in double figures for the fourth straight game, and the Rebels (8-3) shot 51.7 percent as a team to earn their third consecutive win heading into the holiday break.
Ole Miss outrebounded Southeastern Louisiana (3-8) 36-24, using 15 offensive rebounds to hold a 20-6 advantage in second chance points. Ole Miss raced out to an 8-2 advantage before the Lions responded with a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the contest. SLU remained ahead before an Austin Crowley layup tied things up at 35-35. The first half ended with the lead seesawing back and forth. A Shuler jumper with 30 seconds left flipped a one-point deficit into a one-point lead in favor of the Rebels, 42-41, as the teams headed into the locker room.
It was an offensive battle in the opening half with both squads making 17 buckets and shooting over 50 percent. Southeastern Louisiana was 17 of 28 (60.7 percent) from the floor, while Ole Miss made 17 of 31 (54.8 percent). The Lions were on fire from beyond the arc, knocking down seven of their eight attempts. Sy led the way with nine points, but it was Brewer who scored 17 for the Lions over the first 20 minutes.
Southeastern Louisiana cooled off from long distance in the second half, but still made three of the seven three-point attempts. The Rebels remained in front, and five consecutive points by Hinson doubled the lead to double figures, 69-59. SLU responded with a 7-0 run to make it a one-possession ballgame late, but Ole Miss converted at the line down the stretch to hold onto a seven-point win.
Following the holiday break, the Rebels return home to close out the 2019 calendar year. Ole Miss hosts Tennessee Tech in The Pavilion for its first Sunday game of the season (Dec. 29). Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. on SEC Network+.
