Rebels Set to Aim High at Air Rifle Olympic Trials

12/5/2019 | Rifle

OXFORD, Miss. – The stakes at the 2019 Winter Airgun Championships are greater than ever as the annual event will also begin the qualification process for determining who will earn spots on the USA Shooting Team as part of the Air Rifle Olympic Trials, Part I.

Six total Rebels will compete for four coveted Team USA air rifle slots inside the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Dec. 6-8. Scores from Part I will be added to Part II, which will be held Feb. 7-9.  Four current members of the squad are slated to compete.

Freshman Claire O'Neel, sophomore Jillian Zakrzeski, and juniors Abby Buesseler and Kamilla Kisch will be joined by 2017 Ole Miss graduate Ali Weisz and current assistant coach JP Lucas, a nine-time All-American during his collegiate days.

Weisz' air rifle credentials have been outstanding over the past year. She became the first Ole Miss Rebel to win a Women's Air Rifle Gold Medal at the Pan American Games in early August. At the 2018 Winter Airgun Championships last December, Weisz set the American women's 60-shot qualification record en route to her first Gold Medal in the competition.

Lucas also shot extremely well last December, capturing second overall in the 10-meter men's air rifle event. He along with Weisz finished runner-up in air rifle mixed team.

Current team members Buesseler and O'Neel should place well as both are averaging over 590 points per match this season. Both are ranked in the Top 20 for NCAA athletes. Scores will be higher this weekend as the Olympic Trials use an international scoring format, which add decimals to each shot.

The USA Shooting Team will consist of eight total athletes for rifle at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. There will be four shooters for air rifle and four for smallbore, including two for each gender. The Smallbore Olympic Trials, Part II will determine the other half of the Team USA in late March. The Olympics will feature men's, women's, and mixed team competitions in 50-meter smallbore and 10-meter air rifle.
