Starters Score 78 of the team’s 83 Points
OXFORD, Miss. – All five starters scored in double figures as balanced scoring led the Ole Miss men's basketball team to an 83-67 victory over former head coach Rod Barnes and his CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners Saturday afternoon at The Pavilion. Ole Miss starters scored 78 of the team's 83 points in the win.
The Rebels (6-3) shot a season-best 57.8 percent (26 of 45) from the floor, including 66.7 percent (14 of 21) in the second half to break away from the Roadrunners (4-7). Sophomore Blake Hinson tallied a game-high 23 points by going 6 of 8 from the field and 9 of 12 from the charity stripe. Breein Tyree also found success at the line, going 11 of 14 to contribute to his fifth 20-point game of the season. Tyree added six assists, one shy of his career high. Fellow guard Devontae Shuler took care of the basketball as well, dishing out a personal-best six assists without committing a turnover. The Irmo, South Carolina, native recorded 15 points as well. Junior Khadim Sy posted his second consecutive double-digit scoring output, tallying 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds, and KJ Buffen scored all 10 of his points in the first half.
CSU Bakersfield was led by the trio of Taze Moore (17 points), Czar Perry (16 points) and Shawn Stith (15 points). Moore and Stitch brought down five rebounds apiece to pace the Roadrunners, while Perry added a team-high eight assists.
Ole Miss raced out to a 12-0 lead, starting 4 of 6 from the floor and holding the Roadrunners without a point for the first 3:19 of the game. In fact, the Rebels forced CSUB to miss its first seven shots before a making a layup with 13:25 left in the first half. The Roadrunners responded by sinking their next three attempts, slicing the Ole Miss lead to seven, 19-12.
Buffen's hot start pushed the Rebels' cushion back to double digits, as he quickly got into double figures of his own midway through the opening half. The junior drained five of his first six shots to tally 10 points in 10 minutes.
CSU Bakersfield shot 80 percent (8 of 10) for the remainder of the first half, making it a three-point game at the break, 40-37. Each team went 12 of 24 (50.0 percent) from the field through the first 20 minutes. Hinson (11), Buffen (10) and Tyree (9) combined for 30 of the Rebels' 40 first half points.
Ole Miss increased its lead in the second half, as Shuler and Sy stepped up and reached double figures. After a Sy dunk, Shuler knocked down a triple try from the wing. From a good look by Buffen, Sy converted a three-point play the old fashioned way to push the Rebels ahead 65-52.
Continuing to crash the glass, the Roadrunners would not let Ole Miss take the game easily. It was a six-point game with less than five minutes to go before the Rebels finished strong. Making their last eight shots of the game, while keeping CSUB without a field goal for the final 3:41 of the contest, the Rebels ballooned their lead to double digits with a 13-3 run and a 16-point victory.
The Rebels won't have a midweek game due to final exams, but they will remain at home for their next contest. One week after facing CSU Bakersfield and former head coach Rod Barnes, Ole Miss will battle Kermit Davis' former team Middle Tennessee. On Davis' 60th birthday (Dec. 14), the matchup will tip off at 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network. Following the game, the Ole Miss women's basketball team will host Southeast Missouri.
