Another Historic Fall Season for Ole Miss Women’s Golf
12/9/2019 | Women's Golf
Rebels Won Three Tournaments, Collected Two Individual Titles
OXFORD, Miss. – It was another historic fall season for the Ole Miss women's golf team. Three team titles tied the program record for wins in a season, last set during the 2017-18 campaign.
The Rebels are first in the conference in scoring (283.87, -4.13) and team wins (three), while having three players in the top-12 individually in scoring average (Johnson, Swann, Ball).
Ole Miss finished no worse than a tie for third the entire fall, which happened in the opening event of the season at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational (Sept. 9-10).
The Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 23-25) was up next in Colorado, and it proved to not be much of a challenge for the Rebels. They took home the team title at 15-under with four out of the starting five finishing in the top-12 individually. Freshman Andrea Lignell had a career-finish, ending in seventh place after going 69-67 the first two rounds.
The Rebels then headed to historic Medinah Country Club for the Illini Women's Invitational (Oct. 7-8). Ole Miss finished runner-up thanks to a 13-under 275 final round, the second-lowest round in program history. Kennedy Swann made headlines winning her first individual title. The senior had a career week, going par or better in all three rounds of competition on her way to a career-low 54-hole score of 9-under (68-72-67—207).
Ole Miss headed back to Texas for the Jim West Challenge (Oct. 20-21) and the trophy case from the fall added another piece of hardware. The Rebels shot 28-under over the three days of competition, a new career-low tournament total, highlighted by an incredible 19-under first round, the lowest single-round total in program history.
A trip to Cabo to end the fall season sounds nice in itself, but what Ole Miss did at the Battle at the Beach (Nov. 1-3) made the trip all the more memorable.
The Rebels fired an 11-under 277 on the final day, the fourth-lowest single round total in program history, to take home the title by seven strokes ahead of No. 19 LSU. Ole Miss was the only team in the field of 16 to go under par for the tournament, and their 54-hole score of 7-under 857 (302-278-277) was good for the sixth lowest 54-hole total in program history.
Julia Johnson had a memorable experience down in Cabo to say the least. Her final round 61 was a course record at Club Campestre San Jose, and it tied the NCAA record for lowest individual round, which has only been done three times before. Her individual title marked her third win of her career, which is third all-time in program history, while setting the new lowest tournament total record at 13-under 203.
Johnson finished top-20 in every fall event with two top-5s. She is the leading returner in the SEC in terms of scoring average (70.40) and went par-or-better in 12 of her 15 rounds, including seven rounds in the 60s.
Swann finished in a tie for 16th in Mexico, and finished no worse than a tie for 17th all fall including her individual win. The senior transfer from Clemson, in her first full year playing in the SEC, is seventh in the conference in scoring (71.20) and appeared in all five events this fall.
Conner Beth Ball appeared in three events and finished top-10 in the last two of the fall. She is one of three Rebels to average under par per 18 holes (71.67).
Pi-Lillebi Hermansson put together two tied for eighth performances, both career-best finishes. She opened her senior year with a 5-under 67 in New Mexico, which set a new career-low round.
Freshman Andrea Lignell and Chiara Tamburlini both made their Rebel debuts this fall. Lignell appeared in four events, and led the Rebels, tying for seventh individually, in the first win of the season at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Tamburlini played in two events, including a runner-up finish at the Battle at the Beach, going 70-69-70.
The Rebels ended the fall ranked No. 10 in the WGCA Coaches Poll, the first time cracking the top 10 in program history. Ole Miss came in at No. 11 in the last Golfstat rankings of the fall, the highest Golfstat ranking in program history.
The championship season begins in the spring as the Rebels get back on the course in February for the Moon Golf Invitational (Feb. 17-18) in Melbourne, Florida.
