Wegener Leads Rebels on Day One in Texas

Sophomore Shot a 2-under 70 in the First Round
HOUSTON, Texas – Cecil Wegener paced the Rebels on day one at the All-American Intercollegiate. The sophomore shot a first round 2-under 70 as the No. 49 ranked men's golf team kicked off the spring season.
Wegener got off to a hot start on the back nine with two birdies through his first six holes on the challenging Tournament Course at the Golf Club of Houston. Going bogey free over his final 10 holes, he finished in red figures to sit in a tie for fourth and just two shots behind tournament leader Mark Reppe of Baylor.
The Rebels, as a team, shot a 293 (+5) and sit in eighth, ten back of first place Sam Houston State. The Rebels were second in the field scoring 61 pars on day one, including a team-high 15 by senior Josh Seiple.
Jackson Suber shot a 1-over 73 to start his spring. The freshman led the team in birdies with four, three of them coming on the front nine. Fellow freshman, Sarut Vongchaisit, made his debut in the Ole Miss lineup and opened with a 75 (+3) that included a pair of birdies on the back nine.
The Rebels will look to make a charge on moving day Monday as second round play is set to begin at 8:00 a.m. CT.
"We certainly didn't have our best stuff today, but we weren't that far off," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Nobody was ever out of it and these guys really fought hard to salvage the round. I will be surprised if we don't have a great round tomorrow."
