Sophomore Shot a Second Round 4-under 68
HOUSTON – Ole Miss sophomore Cecil Wegener has the lead at the All-American Intercollegiate after a second round 4-under 68 on Monday afternoon.
Wegener got off to a hot start on the back nine for the second straight day and takes a two-shot lead into the final round of play on Tuesday.
"I've been hitting it well all week and the key for me has just been staying patient on the greens and trusting that putts will fall," said Wegener. "The mindset for tomorrow doesn't change, I'm just going to go make as many birdies as I can and see what happens."
The Ridgeland, Mississippi, native leads the team in birdies with eight overall, including four in a five-hole stretch today on his way to finishing in red figures.
"Cecil had an incredible round of golf today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "He was very solid from tee to green and really played great considering the conditions. It was cold and very windy so any round under par was very impressive."
The Rebels tied for the lowest round of the day, shooting a 2-over 290, and sit in sixth place, 10 shots back of first place Sam Houston State. Ole Miss is second in the field in pars with 118, including a team-high 25 by senior Josh Seiple.
"We did a better job of handling the conditions today as a team," said Malloy. "Unfortunately, we were one score short of having a great team round. I hope to be able to get one more score tomorrow to help us vault up the leaderboard."
Consistent play by Jackson Suber moved him into the top-15 individually. A string of birdies on No.'s 12 and 13 paved the way for an even par second round. The freshman led the team with 14 pars today and went bogey-free for the last 12 holes.
Final round is set to begin at 8:00 a.m CT Tuesday morning.
