Ole Miss Falls 81-75 in Rivalry at The Pavilion
OXFORD, Miss. – A sold out crowd showed up at The Pavilion to cheer on the Ole Miss men's basketball team Saturday afternoon, but No. 21 Mississippi State claimed the rivalry matchup 81-75 thanks to a second half rally.
Ole Miss (14-7, 4-4 SEC) found most of its success from beyond the arc, going 11 of 21 (52.4 percent), and at the free throw line (12 of 14). Senior Bruce Stevens added 13 points off the bench, going 5 of 10 from the floor.
Behind 27 points from Quinndary Weatherspoon and a double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds) from Reggie Perry, the Bulldogs (16-5, 4-4 SEC) claimed their first ever win in The Pavilion. MSU outscored the Rebels 42-32 in the second half by shooting 52.0 percent (13 of 25) over the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs also turned 15 offensive rebounds into 19 second chance points to factor into the game's decision. MSU held a 40-28 advantage on the glass.
With the game tied at 8-8 following a Blake Hinson three-pointer, MSU scored seven straight points before the Rebels went on a run of their own. Tyree made a three, and Terence Davis got a jumper to go. A Shuler three gave Ole Miss the lead, while Tyree added another triple in the sequence. Terence Davis provided a putback, and the 13-0 run made it 21-15 in favor of the Rebels.
The Bulldogs scored six consecutive points to tie the game, and the two rivals exchanged leads throughout the remainder of the first half until Ole Miss made a late charge. Sinking their last five field goals of the half, the Rebels took a 43-39 lead into the locker room.
Ole Miss shot 56 percent (14 of 25) in the opening half, including 6 of 9 from beyond on the arc and a perfect 9 of 9 at the free throw line. Shuler was perfect on his own, going 4 of 4 from the floor, making all three of his three-point attempts as well as three free throws for 14 points. Tyree added 12 over 19 minutes. Meanwhile, MSU was led by Weatherspoon's 13 points and stayed in the game thanks to offensive rebounding. Ten first half offensive boards led to 12 second chance points.
The Rebels held on to the lead through the first 10 minutes of the second half before a three by Perry gave MSU a 62-60 advantage with 9:23 left in the game. A 9-0 run bumped the visitor's cushion to six, but five straight points from Tyree got the game back to one. His three-pointer squared the contest at 73-73 with 3:53 remaining. However, MSU held Ole Miss without a field goal for the rest of the game. Despite Tyree scoring 13 of the team's final 15 points, the visitors escaped Oxford with a win for the first time in eight years.
