2/22/2019 | Rifle

AKRON, Ohio – Ole Miss Rifle kicked off Day 1 of the Great America Rifle Conference Championships at the University of Akron's Stile Athletics Field House with 2302 points in smallbore.

The Rebels sit fourth after Friday's competition, with air rifle set for Saturday. The schedule for air rifle is attached and listed below.

West Virginia leads with 2342 points, followed by Nebraska (2319) and Kentucky (2309). Ole Miss won a tiebreaker over Akron based off each team's fifth-highest scorer. Both teams recorded 2302 points and had the same number of center shots.

It was the ninth consecutive time this season the Rebels eclipsed 2300 points in smallbore. The GARC Championships is also the largest collegiate tournament held each year.

Ole Miss freshman Erin Walsh finished tied for ninth with a 580, which was just two points off a career high and one point from advancing to the final round. The finals consist of the top eight shooters to determine an individual champion. It uses an Olympic-style elimination format where the highest scoring athletes advance through each round. The two-time defending NCAA champion Morgan Phillips of West Virginia won the GARC finals Friday.

Walsh set a career best in kneeling with a 194. Teammate Abby Buesseler notched a season-high 194 points of her own in the smallbore opening event. The sophomore from Stacy, Minn. recorded a 573 smallbore total. Tying a season high was senior Harley Gardner. Her 199 points in prone propelled her to 574.

Youth continued to dominate for Ole Miss as rookie Jillian Zakrzeski fired a 575 and rounded out the scoring. Junior Alana Kelly earned 576 points as a non-counter. Randi Loudin (570), Sophia Cuozzo (567), and Hayley Carroll (566) also competed for the Rebels.

Marsha's Minute…
"Today was a great learning opportunity for us. Our score was very close to our season average and in many ways, this was a harder match. All nine GARC teams were on the line together and there were at least 200 spectators. We definitely had some positive takeaways. And I think everyone is looking forward to air rifle tomorrow."
