Rebels Dominate Georgia 80-64 Behind 31 Points from Breein Tyree
ATHENS, Ga. – Breein Tyree broke the 1,000-point threshold en route to a career-high 31 points, leading the Ole Miss men's basketball team to an 80-64 victory over Georgia Saturday afternoon. Ole Miss (16-7, 6-4 SEC) capped off a perfect week by winning in Athens for the first time in seven years.
The Rebels had three double-figure scorers including Tyree. Freshman Blake Hinson added 13 points of his own with three made three-pointers. Senior Terence Davis was all over the stat sheet for the second straight game, scoring 12 points with five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Bruce Stevens pulled down a season-high nine rebounds to go along with six points, including 4 of 4 from the line.
Ole Miss was very active on the defensive end, grabbing 10 steals and forcing 20 turnovers that led to 19 points on the other end. With the help of 13 offensive rebounds, the Rebels held a 21-5 advantage in second chance points.
The Bulldogs (10-13, 1-9 SEC) were led by three players with 10 points apiece in Jordan Harris, Rayshaun Hammonds and Tyree Crump. Harris pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
By making their first four attempts from beyond the arc, as well as finding a few buckets down low, Georgia took an early 18-8 advantage five minutes into the game. However, the Rebels responded with a 14-2 run to take the lead. Devontae Shuler started the spurt with and elbow jumper in transition. His three-pointer from the wing tied the game at 20-20. Terence Davis grabbed an offensive rebound before finding the bottom of the net to give Ole Miss its first lead of the game.
Georgia led by one until Hinson hit back-to-back threes to put the Rebels up 33-28. A sweet spin move by KJ Buffen was sandwiched in between jumpers by Tyree. Stevens added four straight points to complete a 14-0 run, as Ole Miss held the Bulldogs scoreless for six minutes. The stretch helped the Rebels go into the locker room ahead by a dozen, 45-33.
Ole Miss forced 16 Georgia turnovers in the first half, leading to 16 points on the other end. The Rebels made seven threes in the opening 20 minutes as well. After Hammonds scored 10 points in the opening seven minutes to give the Bulldogs a double-digit lead, Ole Miss held Georgia's leading scorer without a point for the remainder of the game.
The Rebels maintained a comfortable advantage in the second half. Tyree drove the lane for a pair of buckets to give him 20 on the afternoon, forcing Georgia head coach Tom Crean to call timeout with Ole Miss ahead 55-40 with 12:29 remaining.
A three by Hinson, his third of the game, bumped him into double figures and increased the margin to 17. Tyree continued to dominate the game, getting to the rim and converting some tough buckets. The play by the junior guard led Ole Miss to a convincing road victory.
Up next, the Rebels remain on the road. Ole Miss heads to Auburn (Feb. 13), looking to sweep the season series. The Rebels knocked off then-No. 10 Auburn 82-67 at The Pavilion in one month ago (Jan. 9). Tipoff with the Tigers is set for 7:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
