Rebels Tied for Sixth Heading into Final Round Saturday
CASA DE CAMPO, Dominican Republic – The Ole Miss women's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Tar Heel Classic on Friday, standing in fifth place as a team while Julia Johnson is tied for sixth individually.
Ole Miss finished ahead of four teams ranked in the Golfstat national rankings, going 288-294 on day one. The Rebels gained the most strokes off the par 5's, going 2-under for the day as a team and lead the field in total pars with 120. No. 12 Wake Forest hold the clubhouse lead at 9-under behind individual leader Jennifer Kupcho's rounds of 66-69 today.
"I was proud of our fight today," assistant coach Zack Byrd said. "We have been working hard on par 5 scoring and course management. We did a good job of missing it in the right spots on a very visually intimidating golf course."
"Our game plan this week has been rock solid. We just need to take better advantage of the par 5's tomorrow and enjoy another round on an absolutely stunning golf course."
Johnson came out swinging this morning, firing a bogey-free first round 2-under 70 with 16 pars and two birdies. The sophomore continued her consistent play into the afternoon finishing with an even-par 70, and leads the tournament in pars with 28.
"It felt great to get back on the course again today," Johnson said. "We've been home for a while practicing and I feel like my game is in the best shape it's been in a while. I'm going to keep playing smart golf and try to make a few more putts tomorrow."
Macy Somoskey wasted no time making an impact in the lineup today. The freshman went 72-74 and is tied for 21st individually, all while leading the team in birdies with six. Fellow freshman Ellen Hutchinson-Kay joins Somoskey as tied for 21st after the two had identical rounds of 72-74 today.
Rounding out play for the Rebels were Conner Beth Ball, who is in the top-30 after back-to-back 2-over 74's, and Kennedy Swann, who made her Ole Miss debut Friday and shot 75-76 and is second on the team in birdies with five.
Third and final round begins tomorrow morning with a 6:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with players from Ohio State and TCU.
