Johnson Leads Rebels On Day One at Evans Derby Experience

3/23/2019 | Women's Golf

AUBURN, Ala. – The Ole Miss women's golf team completed the first round of the Evans Derby Experience on Saturday, sitting in 13th as a team while Julia Johnson is tied for 10th individually after the opening 18 holes in Auburn.

The tournament features one of the top fields in collegiate golf this year, as every team is ranked in the top-50 in Golfstat's national rankings.

Ole Miss shot a first round 17-over 305 and is fifth in the field in total pars with 60. No. 8 Arkansas holds the clubhouse lead after the first day at 3-under while two players are tied for the lead individually after first round 4-under 68's.

"Today was a tough start to our weekend," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We made too many mental mistakes and starting pressing on holes instead of sticking with our game plan."

"We were able to regroup after the round and today's effort will be a great learning experience for this team. I have no doubt we can bounce back and we look forward to giving it our best effort tomorrow."

Johnson continued her consistent play lately with a first round even par 72. The sophomore went bogey-free on her last 13 holes today and leads the field in pars with 16. Johnson gained the most strokes off the par 3's, going 1-under, and it was the fifth round at par or better for Johnson this spring, leading the team.

"Julia played well today," Henkes said. "This is a tough course that requires players to miss it in the correct spots and she did a great job of that today."

Kennedy Swann put together a solid first round 3-over 75 with one birdie and four miscues. The Clemson transfer is second on the team in pars with 13 and sits tied for 42nd individually.

Ellen Hutchinson-Kay came out of the gates with two birdies through her first three holes. The freshman finished her day one with a 6-over 78.

Rounding out play for the Rebels was freshman Macy Somoskey, who finished the day tied for 73rd after a first round 8-over 80, and Conner Beth Ball, who is tied for 85th following an 11-over 83.

Pi-Lillebi Hermansson and Kie Purdom, both competing as individuals, shot identical 7-over 79's on day one and are tied for 67th.

Second round play begins Sunday morning with tee times for Ole Miss beginning at 10 a.m. CT off hole No. 10. Ole Miss will be paired with players from Clemson.
