Suber Leads Rebels On Day One in South Carolina

Sophomore Shot First Round 2-under 70

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Jackson Suber fired a 2-under 70 as the Ole Miss men's golf team completed the first round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Sunday afternoon. Suber is tied for 14th, while the defending champion Rebels sit in 11th after day one.

The Rebels got off to a fast start with four birdies in the first three holes and finished the day with an even-par 288. Ole Miss gained the most strokes off the par 5's today, going 3-under as a team, and is eighth in the field in pars (57) and birdies (15). After 18 holes, the Rebels are nine shots back of the leaders, SEC foes Missouri and No. 20 South Carolina.

"We certainly didn't score the way that we wanted, but we really salvaged that round down the stretch," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We played very poorly on our front nine and rallied on the tougher nine holes to finish. We are only nine strokes back with two rounds left, and we have plenty of time to catch up."

Suber has found success playing collegiate golf in South Carolina this season. The freshman finished runner-up at his first collegiate event on Kiawah Island's Ocean Course and opened up today firing a 2-under 70 at Bulls Bay. Suber played the par 4's and par 5's under par and is tied for the team lead in birdies with five, including two in a row on holes 11 and 12 to start his back nine today.

Beau Briggs put together a solid even-par round (72) today with two birdies and just two miscues to finish tied for 31st after the first 18. The senior leads the team in pars with 14 and played the par 5's under par today, going 1-under on the longest holes on the course.

Josh Seiple had a bounce back final nine holes, where he shot a 2-under 33 to end his day at 1-over. Four of the senior's five birdies on day one came down the final stretch, moving him into the top 40 individually.

Sarut Vongchaisit continued his consistent play that earned him SEC Freshman of the Week the past two times he's teed it up, shooting a first round 1-over 73. The freshman went bogey free on his last 11 holes, including a birdie on No. 18, the tough finishing hole that had the lowest number of birdies (5) by the field on day one.

Second round play begins Monday morning with tee times starting at 8:45 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will be paired with players from Iowa State and Purdue.
