Rebels Shoot 10-over 294 in Second Round, Remain Ahead of Three SEC Teams

CABO SAN LUCAS – The No. 48 Ole Miss men's golf team completed the second round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate Monday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Rebels are tied for seventh as a team, with Beau Briggs in the top-15 individually heading into the final round Tuesday morning.

Ole Miss shot a 10-over 294 in the second round and sit in seventh with No. 12 LSU and host Houston, while remaining ahead of three SEC teams. The Rebels are fourth in the field in par-5 scoring, going 5-under on the first two days on the longest holes on the course and are third in the field with 115 pars. No. 1 Oklahoma State, the defending national champions, leapfrogged No. 9 Arizona State to grab the lead at 22-under following a second round 269 (-15).  The Cowboys also have the individual leader in Austin Eckroat, who is 10-under for the tournament. No. 36 Baylor is nine shots back, and the Sun Devils are 10 strokes behind the leaders.

"We didn't do a very good job down the stretch of handling adversity," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We are a young team and looked like it at times. It is all a part of improving, and our guys will be ready to bounce back tomorrow."

Briggs put together an even par 71 second round with four birdies, 14 pars and four bogeys. The senior leads the team in pars with 26 after two rounds. At 2-under through 36 holes, Briggs is one of 21 golfers under par.

"The key for me tomorrow is to just stay patient," said Briggs. "I hit good putts all day today but didn't convert enough birdies. My game is good and I have a lot of confidence heading into the final round."

Sarut Vongchaisit moved into the top-30 individually after a second round 72 (+1). The freshman is second on the team in birdies with seven and leads the tournament in par-3 scoring (-2). He birdied two of his first three holes, while keeping big numbers out of play with nine pars over his final 10 holes.

Fellow freshman Jackson Suber fired a 75 (+4), putting together a smooth round aside from a quadruple bogey on the 18th hole. Starting his day on the par-5 fourth, he made birdie before closing the round with another birdie at No. 3.

The final round begins Tuesday morning with a 10:00 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with players from No. 27 Florida State, No. 12 LSU, and No. 3 Vanderbilt.
