Rebels Shoot Program Record 12-under 276 in First Round

ARGYLE, Texas – It was a historic first day Monday at The Bruzzy for the Ole Miss women's golf team.

The Rebels hold the team lead at 18-under through the first 36 holes at Lantana Golf Club, while the starting five are all in the top-21 individually.

Ole Miss shot under par collectively in both rounds on the opening day, finishing 276-282—558 and are clinging to a one-stroke lead over No. 43 Texas Tech at 18-under. The first round 276 was a program record for a single round team score.

The Rebels are following a familiar formula for success, going 13-under on the par 5's Monday and are third in the field with 40 total birdies.

"We are really proud of the total team effort today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We hit a lot of great shots and played smart golf all day. It was fun to see all of our hard work over the last few weeks come together for a fantastic day of golf."

Ole Miss has three golfers in the top-10 individually, led by Conner Beth Ball who is tied for sixth. Ball shot back-to-back 3-under 69's and is one of three golfers in the field of 84 to play the par 3's, par 4's and par 5's all under par.

The sophomore went bogey-free her entire first round with 15 pars and three birdies. Ball tallied back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes to close out the opening 18 in Argyle. She continued her hot streak, birdieing 14 and 16 to open second round play.

After a few bogies halfway during the second round, Ball rebounded nicely tallying four birdies and six pars in her final 10 holes of the day.

"Today was the first day this semester that I felt like I was playing my game again," Ball said. "Today, as a team, we clicked and we're ready to finish strong tomorrow. The mindset is continuing to stay aggressive and make more birdies."

The Rebel freshmen shined on day one, with Macy Somoskey and Ellen Hutchinson-Kay both shooting career-best rounds in the morning.

Somoskey, currently tied for ninth place individually at 3-under, fired a career-best 5-under 67 in the first round, going bogey free with five birdies and 13 pars. The Sanford, Florida, native ended her day with a 2-over 74 in the afternoon. The freshman is first in the tournament in total pars with 29 through the first 36 holes.

Hutchinson-Kay followed Somoskey with a career-best round of her own, a 3-under 69 with six birdies; four of which came in the first five holes of the tournament. The Taby, Sweden, native followed her career first round with 2-over 74 in the afternoon and sits tied for 21st overall.

Kennedy Swann added to the career-best list for Ole Miss Monday. Swann rebounded from a 2-over 74 in the first round, to shoot a career-best 5-under 67 in round two, matching Somoskey's low round of the day for Ole Miss.

Swann opened the second round with back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 to get to even-par for the tourney, but the transfer from Clemson wasn't finished. She birdied three straight holes on her back-nine to get to 5-under. Swann is tied for the team lead in birdies with nine, seven of which came during her afternoon round.

Julia Johnson kept her stellar play going as of late, going 71-72—143 on day one. The sophomore kept up her dominance on the par 5's, going 2-under for the day and is second on the team in birdies with eight. Johnson ended the day on a strong note, finishing her second round with four birdies in her last five holes.

Diane Lim made her season debut today, shooting a first round even par 72. Lim, playing as an individual, is second on the team in pars with 26.

Final round play begins tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with Texas Tech and Baylor, and will begin off holes one through four.
