Women’s Golf Set for Match Play in Georgia

Rebels Get Six Seed, Open Against South Carolina
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 36 Ole Miss women's golf team completed the stroke play portion of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Championship on Thursday, shooting a first round 11-over 299 and finishing tied for sixth as a team.
The Rebels are the six seed in the match play bracket by virtue of a higher Golfstat ranking than the host Georgia, and will face South Carolina on Friday morning to open up match play.
"We have two matches tomorrow, which will be a great warm up for us going into SEC's next week," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We have to regroup a bit after today's round. There were a lot of positives to take from our round, despite fumbling a little down the stretch. We will come up with a game plan for tomorrow because it is a totally different mindset than stroke play, but we'll be ready."
Macy Somoskey led Ole Miss on Day One with a 2-over 74, which put her into a tie for 15th place. The freshman was one of seven players in the field to play the par 3's and par 5's both under par, and she leads the Rebels in birdies with three.
The Rebel trio of Julia Johnson, Ellen Hutchinson-Kay and Kennedy Swann are all tied for 23rd individually after rounds of 3-over 75. Johnson's three-over consisted of eleven pars, two birdies and four bogeys. The sophomore birdied the 18th, a par 5 that just saw 14 players birdie on the first day of play.
Hutchinson-Kay played even par on the back nine before three miscues on the front. The freshman birdied both par 3's on the back nine and is second in the field in par 3 scoring. Swann leads the team in pars with 13 and shot 1-under on the back nine.
Conner Beth Ball is tied for 39th after a first round 5-over 77.
Match play begins Friday morning with tee times for Ole Miss starting at 7:42 a.m. CT.
