Rebels Will Face Florida Saturday for Fifth Place at Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic
ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 36 Ole Miss women's golf team went through two matches Friday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens.
The Rebels dropped the morning match to No. 12 South Carolina, 4-1, before rebounding with a 3-0 win over No. 37 Kennesaw State.
"South Carolina played well this morning, but unfortunately, we didn't have the fire power to get it done," said Ole Miss head coach Kory Henkes. "There were some great matches and we fought hard until the final match."
Julia Johnson won the lone match for Ole Miss in the morning, defeating Lois Kaye Go 2-and-1. Go is ranked 22nd in the Golfstat individual rankings.
"I felt great out there today," Johnson said. "My match with South Carolina was back and forth with a lot of great golf. We halved a lot of holes with birdies down the stretch so it felt great to come out with the win."
Conner Beth Ball's match versus Marion Veysseyre came down to the final hole, with Ball eventually missing a stroke on the No. 9 green to lose the match one down.
The Rebels bounced back in the afternoon matches, taking down No. 37 Kennesaw State 3-0. Macy Somoskey got the first victory for Ole Miss winning 4-and-3. Julia Johnson followed shortly thereafter, just needing two putts on hole 16 to win 3-and-2.
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay sealed the deal with a fantastic short chip putting the ball a foot away from the hole. The ensuing tap in gave the Rebels the match victory winning the three matches early.
"The team did a great job of bouncing back in our match against Kennesaw State," Henkes said. "They are a great golf program with a similar ranking. We made a lot of birdies and played solid golf this afternoon. It was fun to end the day on a high note and get the win against Kennesaw State."
Final match gets underway Saturday morning when the Rebels take on Florida for fifth place. Tee times begin at 7 a.m. CT off hole No. 1.
