4/18/2019 | Women's Tennis
Ole Miss Fought Valiantly In 4-2 Defeat Thursday
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Ole Miss Women's Tennis team was halted by No. 24 Florida, 4-2 in the Second Round of the SEC Tournament on a rainy Thursday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Rebels will now wait to see if they earn a spot as a team in the NCAA Tournament during the selection show on Monday, April 29 at 5:30 p.m. CT. On April 30, the NCAA will announce which athletes will be invited to the NCAA Individual Championships.
Rain caused the start of the match to be pushed back two hours. The weather returned to cause havoc, halting the match with a 45-minute delay with Florida a game away from a victory.
Ole Miss (12-12, 5-8 SEC) earned a gritty doubles point to begin the day after the delayed start. Senior Tea Jandric and junior Anna Vrbenska dominated with a 6-1 win on Court 2.
Courts 1 and 3 were pushed the distance, needing decisive tiebreakers. Sophomore Sabina Machalova and junior Alexa Bortles downed No. 42 Victoria Emma and McCartney Kessler, 7-6 (5).
Juniors Tereza Janatova and Cameron Kriscunas outlasted Sydney Berlin and Marlee Zein, 7-6 (3). Court 3 finished at exactly the same time as Court 1, but was determined to be the clincher.
No. 24 Florida (12-10, 7-6 SEC) quickly tied up the match in singles with a two-set win on Court 6.
The Gators then took the lead with a win on Court 2. No. 73 Jandric dropped a heartbreaking first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7) and fell in the second, 6-1, snapping a five-match win streak and suffering just her second loss of league play.
Bortles tied the match with a two-set winner of her own on Court 5.
Ole Miss lost the first set on the remaining courts, but responded to force do-or-die situations.
No. 94 Machalova won the second 6-3, but was upended by No. 15 Ida Jarlskog 6-4 in the end.
Janatova used a gutsy 7-6 (5) tiebreak to extend her match. After a 45-minute rain delay and needing just one more game to decide the winner, Zein ended the third victorious, 6-3.
Vrbenska led 6-5 in the finale when the match was clinched.
