All Five Players Shoot Par-or-Better, Ole Miss Produces 5-under 275

STANFORD, Calif. - The Ole Miss men's golf team fired a 5-under 275, the lowest team score in program history during postseason play, in the second round of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Led by a pair of 68s from Jackson Suber and Cecil Wegener in round two, the Rebels sit in fifth place after 36 holes.

It was a great day for Ole Miss top to bottom, being the only squad in the field of 13 teams to have all five golfers shoot par-or-better on day two. The 5-under 275 was the lowest single round team score in postseason program history. The previous low was a third round 278 at the Bryan Regional in 2017, the last time the Rebels made it to the National Championship as a team.

"I thought we had a great day, and what I liked the most about today was we were well balanced," head coach Chris Malloy said. "Every guy was in it around even par, which around this place is really good. As we entered this week, I thought an individual round, and especially a team round, of even par you would take every day. For each of our guys to do that individually is great."

Wegener's 68 was highlighted by his bogey-free 14 holes to start off his day. The sophomore made eight straight pars before making birdie on No. 18 to get into red-figures. Birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 made it three in a row to get him to 3-under for the day before his only miscue, a bogey on the par-4 sixth coming down the stretch. Wegener is tied for 16th individually, and is 3-under on the par-5s throughout the week.

"I hit it really well all day. Didn't get a ton of putts to fall, but I have a lot of confidence in my ball striking heading into tomorrow," Wegener said. "We have to keep the confidence going and build on the momentum we gained today."

Suber's 68 featured a 2-under back nine to start his day before a double-bogey on No. 2 sent him back to even. The freshman rallied to make two birdies down the stretch on Nos. 4 and 7 to cap off his second round.

Sarut Vongchaisit followed up his first round 66 with another round under par to remain in second and just two shots off the lead. The freshman fired a 1-under 69, highlighted by a hole out for eagle on the final hole to get into red figures and become a counting score. On the par-4 ninth, his approach from 180 yards out landed inches left of the hole before spinning and finding the bottom of the cup.

"He didn't hit it very well off the tee, he left us with around 180 yards in," Malloy said of Vongchaisit's final hole. "We told him he needed something really special to happen to be a counting score, and he knocked it in there. It's a great shot to hole it from 50 yards, let alone 180 yards, so that was an exciting way to finish a great round of golf."

Through 36 holes, Vongchaisit is one of just two players in the field of 75 players to go under par on the par 3s, par 4s and par 5s. Stanford's David Snyder, tied with Vongchaisit at 5-under, is the only other golfer in the field to accomplish the feat.

Jack Gnam shot a second round even-par 70. The freshman is top-25 individually heading into tomorrow's final round and leads the team in birdies with nine, including five today.

Josh Seiple shot a bounce back even-par 70 on day two. The round of 70 marks a career-low round for Seiple in NCAA postseason play.

The top five teams and top lone individual not on an advancing team after Wednesday's round will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Course in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The final round is set to begin tomorrow morning with tee times for Ole Miss starting at 10:30 a.m. CT. The Rebels will be paired with Georgia Southern and LSU.

"It's the same thing we've told our guys all week. They've got to stay confident, patient, and above all calm," Malloy said. "A lot of weird stuff happens this time of year, and this week there's been a lot of adversity thrown at us and the rest of the teams here."

"The team that can handle that the best, the bad shots the missed putts that are out there in the beginning or middle part of the round, those will be the five teams that make it out of here. Our goal tomorrow is not to get in the top five, it's to win this thing."
