Rebels Shoot First Round 22-over, T-13th After One Round of Stroke Play
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Rebels shot a first round 22-over 314 on Wednesday during the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Wednesday.
Led by a pair of 76s from Ellen Hutchinson-Kay and Kennedy Swann, Ole Miss sits tied for 13th headed into second round play Saturday morning.
Hutchinson-Kay and Swann are both tied for 19th individually.
Despite the challenging the course, the Rebels were able to finish better than seven teams ranked higher in Golfstat's team rankings, as well as ahead of three SEC foes (No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 10 Florida and No. 36 Tennessee).
"I'm really proud of the girls and the way they played today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "Ellen and Kennedy shot 3-over, which is a really solid round on this course. We're proud of the way we started, and hopefully we'll learn from some of those mistakes today and come out a little stronger tomorrow."
Blessings Golf Club proved to be tough for the first day of stroke play, with every squad shooting over par as a team. The average 18-hole score was 7-over par.
"It's extremely challenging out here," Henkes said. "It's over 6,400 yards and there is trouble everywhere. The wind was steady 20-25 miles-per-hour with some gusts up to 30."
Swann, coming in as one of three Rebels with NCAA Championships experience, put together a strong 3-over performance on day one. The junior started off with a birdie, and battled the rest of the way to turn in her 76 with 13 pars and four bogeys. Swann played the par 5s 1-under on the first day.
"I made some mistakes out there, but it is a really tough golf course," Swann said. "I kept my head in it, and I know everyone kept fighting. It's a tough golf course, but it's tough for everyone. We just always have to make the best out of the situations that we're in."
Hutchinson-Kay, making her NCAA postseason debut, shot a solid 3-over her first round with a birdie, two bogeys and a double. The freshman leads the team in pars with 14, and played the par 4s at even for the day.
Conner Beth Ball had an up and down first round. With a team leading four birdies, the sophomore carded an opening 6-over 79.
Julia Johnson rounded out the counting scores with a 10-over 83.
With severe weather forecasted throughout the day on Saturday in Fayetteville, the Rebels will be prepared for what could be a long day at Blessings Golf Club for the second round of stroke play.
"Your mindset just has to be ready for a long day, there could be delays and you might be sitting in the clubhouse for a long time, you just never know," Henkes said. "You just have to be prepared for that and it might be more wet out there, so the ball might not roll out as much. If you hit it in the fairway, it might play a little longer than it did today. We just have to take that all into consideration."
The Rebels are set to tee off starting at 1:01 p.m. Ole Miss will be paired with San Jose State and Purdue.
