5/6/2019 | Women's Golf
Swann, Hutchinson-Kay Both Open Up with a 1-under 71
NORMAN, Okla. – The Ole Miss women's golf team sits tied for third after the first 18 holes at the NCAA Regional in Norman, Oklahoma, on Monday.
The Rebels shot 287 (-1) as a team during the first round at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. The mark ties for the second-lowest round in program history at an NCAA regional.
The Rebels also shot 1-under last season when Ole Miss competed in the San Francisco Regional, 364 days ago. It marked the seventh round this season Ole Miss has been par or under as a team.
Ole Miss was second in the field in total pars with 63 on day one.
"The girls played really well today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We started out a little bit slow, but then we really made a rally on the back nine. That's something we've been working on all year, finishing strong.
"We played the last three holes at 1-under which is a really tough stretch of holes. I was really proud of the fight all the girls put in and I'm really happy with the way they played today."
The Rebels were led by Kennedy Swann and Ellen Hutchinson-Kay who both opened up with 1-under 71s.
Swann, who is making her first postseason appearance as a Rebel – third overall – used an eagle on the last hole to jump into the top-15 individually.
The junior was even on the front nine Monday and got off to a good start on the back with back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and 11 before an eagle on 18, which got her into red figures.
Swann's eagle on 18, holing out from 133 yards, was the only one on that hole on Monday.
Hutchinson-Kay, in her NCAA Regional debut, had a near flawless first round. The freshman matched Swann with a 1-under 71 with three birdies, 13 pars and only two bogeys. This marked her eight round at par or under this season.
Conner Beth Ball started off with an even-par 72. The sophomore leads the team in pars with 14, which is good for third in the field.
Julia Johnson opened with a 1-over 73 with a pair of birdies. The sophomore played the par 3s and par 5s both at 1-under Monday.
Second round tee times start at 8:30 a.m. CT for the Rebels. Ole Miss will be paired with Mississippi State and Texas Tech.
"It's going to be a little windy here tomorrow," Henkes said. "It's going to be a little bit of a grind. We just need to keep our heads down, hit the big part of the fairways and greens and just keep doing our best to stay level-headed out there, because anything can happen in those conditions."
