Swann, Somoskey Pace Ole Miss with 1-over 73s
NORMAN, Okla. – The Ole Miss women's golf team shot a second round 294 (+6) on Tuesday and is tied for sixth after 36 holes of play at the NCAA Regional in Norman, Oklahoma.
After a getting off to a slow start in Round 2, the Rebels rallied on the back nine to put up a solid second round team score.
Ole Miss was 2-under as a team on No. 18, which helped push them into sixth place with 18 holes left to play on Wednesday. The Rebels are third in the field in total birdies with 24.
"We started a little slow in today's round but it was fun to see the team persevere after a little adversity was thrown their way," head coach Kory Henkes said. "They did a fantastic job of bouncing back and playing some great golf in the windy conditions."
After a first round 1-under, sophomore Kennedy Swann followed up with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday. The Austin, Texas, native got off to a hot start, making birdie on two of her first three holes and sits tied for 22nd individually. Swann was second in the field in birdies on Tuesday, carding five during her second round.
Macy Somoskey tied Swann for the low round of the day for Ole Miss with a 1-over 73, improving seven strokes from her round one tally. The freshman is second on the team in pars with 25 through 36 holes.
Julia Johnson rebounded from a rough start to her round on Tuesday and rallied to shoot a second round 2-over 74, with a pair of birdies on the par 5s. She is second in the field in par 5 scoring throughout the tournament at 3-under and is tied for 33rd individually.
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay used a birdie on No. 18 to cap off her second round with a 2-over 74. The freshman from Taby, Sweden, hit an approach shot from 90 yards out to within five feet of the pin to record her third birdie of the day. After a 3-over on the front nine, Hutchinson-Kay rallied on the back and sits tied for 27th individually.
Conner Beth Ball shot a 3-over 75 and leads the team in total pars with 27. After a birdie on No. 10, Ball had only one miscue on No. 12 to finish even par on the tough back nine.
Final round play begins Wednesday morning with a shotgun start set for 9 a.m. The Rebels will be paired with Arizona State, Texas Tech and Mississippi State.
The top six teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Championship, to be held May 17-22 at Blessings Golf Course in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
"It is always great to be in contention going into the final round," Henkes said. "Just like any other tournament, we always play with a positive mindset. A winning attitude combined with smart course management will be the key to success for tomorrow."
