Two-Time All-American Wins Second Career Honor at USA Shooting Nationals
FORT BENNING, Ga. – The terrific spring for Ole Miss Rifle alum Ali Weisz carried over to summer along with seven current Rebels at the Rifle/Pistol National Championships Saturday and Sunday in Georgia. Weisz secured her second national title in Women's Air Rifle competition, while the returning Rebels finished in or near the top half of 112 national competitors.
Weisz won with 1256.1 points, including a first-place showing in the Final, at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit's Home of Champions. Last year Weisz finished runner-up after winning the same event in 2017 weeks after graduating.
This past weekend was yet another tremendous showing for the Belgrade, Montana product. She earned the right to compete for Team USA at the upcoming 2019 Pan American Games with a pair of first-place performances in March Spring Selection matches.
In May, Weisz competed at the International Shooting Sport Federation Rifle World Cup competition in Munich, Germany. She also placed 14th individually and fourth in the mixed team event in Beijing, China for air rifle. She preceded that with a national record score of 1259.9 at the 2018 Winter Airgun Championships in December.
Weisz edged Angeline Henry (1255.2) and Mary Tucker (1251.1) who earned silver and bronze, respectively.
Incoming freshman Claire O'Neel lead the pack of current Rebels with a two-day mark of 1235.0. She finished 19th overall and 13th for juniors.
Upcoming senior Alana Kelly fired 1234.2 points for 22nd. She competed at the ISSF Munich World Cup as well.
Junior Abby Buesseler (36th), sophomore Erin Walsh (44th), incoming recruit Kristen Derting (45th), recent graduate Randi Loudin (1218.0), and junior Kamilla Kisch (1214.6) also represented for Ole Miss.
Walsh (32nd), Derting (33rd), and Kisch (42nd) also finished in the top half of 90 total junior athletes.
Athletes are vying for spots to compete in the upcoming ISSF World Cup in Brazil. Additionally, athletes will use Nationals as the prep and test needed ahead of the upcoming Junior World Cup as well as the Pan American Games.
The Rebels will continue firing at USA Shooting Nationals Tuesday and Wednesday in Women's Three-Position Rifle and will conclude with Women's Prone on Friday and Saturday.
