Rebel Sophomore Wins Five Matches in Three Days
MONROE, La. – Ole Miss sophomore Charlie Miller won the 2019 Cotton States Invitational at Bayou Desiard Country Club (July 24-28), getting the 6-and-4 victory over his high school teammate, University of Alabama golfer Simms Abney, in the finals of match play Sunday (July 28).
The third time was the charm for Miller, who had played in the event both in 2017 and 2018.
The five-day tournament featured two rounds of qualifying stroke play, with the top-32 advancing to match play. After going 1-under (73-70—143) during the qualifying rounds, Miller won five matches in three days to claim the title.
Miller defeated South Alabama's Kyle Robinson 5-and-4 in the round of 32 before taking down Cody Winkler 3-and-2 in the round of 16 Friday afternoon (July 26). In the quarterfinals, the Ole Miss Rebel claimed a 3-and-2 win over Shayler Dance of Rutgers. After Dance won the first three holes, Miller rallied by taking the next four holes to hold onto the lead for good and advance to the semifinals.
The regulation 18-hole match between Miller and Louisiana's Charlie Flynn to determine who would advance to the finals. With the seesaw battle tied after 18, Miller drained a long birdie putt on the first playoff hole to secure his spot in the championship match.
The finals featured a battle between SEC golfers who were high school teammates, and it was the Rebel emerging victorious. Miller led 2-up heading to the back nine, and with three straight birdies on holes 10-12, he cruised to the 6-and-4 win over Abney.
The Jackson, Mississippi, native is having a successful summer on the links, producing a fourth-place performance at the Mississippi Amateur Championship (June 20-23) and a ninth-place finish at the Southeastern Amateur (June 12-15).
