Rebel Alum Secures Gold Medal and Olympic Quota Thursday

LIMA, Peru – Ole Miss Rifle alum Ali Weisz was as good as gold for Team USA as she secured the Gold Medal in Women's 10-Meter Air Rifle at the 2019 Pan American Games Thursday on the Las Palmas Air Base in Peru.

She earned the medal with a Pan American Games Finals record of 249.4 points and added an Olympic Quota for the USA Shooting Team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Weisz, a 2017 Ole Miss graduate, finished sixth in Qualification with 620.5 points to advance to the eight-person Finals. A total of 24 of the best athletes from North and South America competed in the event.

Fellow American Minden Miles of Texas set a Pan American Qualification record with a 627.4 to also advance. Miles would eventually secure the Silver Medal for Team USA with 246.4 points in the elimination stage.

Weisz and Argentina's Fernanda Maria Russo Romero traded the lead at the first and second cuts and were tied at 166.1 at the third elimination. Each round of Finals shooting saw the field shrink by one and intensified the competition.

A near flawless 10.8 followed by a 10.1 gave Weisz the lead for good in the fourth round and continued to grow.

Russo Romero earned the Bronze Medal when Miles was 0.1 points better at the sixth cut. Weisz was ahead by nearly three points at the final cut and cruised to victory with a 9.8 and another 10.8 in the two-person showdown.

Weisz tallied an Olympic Quota Thursday which grows USA Shooting's roster by one athlete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Weisz, a two-time All-American, will look to earn another medal Saturday as she teams up with Tim Sherry of Colorado in the 10-Meter Air Rife Mixed Team event. Qualification begins at 9 a.m. CT and will wrap up with Finals at 11 a.m.

Sherry and Weisz saw success as a pair at the International Shooting Sport Federation Rifle World Cup match in Beijing, China. The duo finished fourth for Team USA in April.

The XVIII Pan American Games run through August 11 with more than 6,500 athletes from 41 nations in North and South America. A total of 61 sporting disciplines will be contested.
