Johnson, Foster and Stackpole Selected as Players to Watch in 2019
OXFORD, Miss. โ Two days out from the start of the 2019 season, Ole Miss' Grace Johnson, Channing Foster and Haleigh Stackpole have been named to the SEC Preseason Watch List, announced Tuesday by the league office.
ย
A list of "players to watch" as selected by each team's head coach, it is the second-straight appearance on the preseason watch list for Foster, while Johnson and Stackpole each make their first showing.
ย
Having started each and every one of Ole Miss' 42 contests since joining the Rebel squad, Johnson was named a team captain for her junior season in Oxford. The anchor of Ole Miss' backline, the Centerville, Utah product also provides offensive production from her center back position, tying for second on the team with four assists a year ago. Johnson bagged one of the most important goals of the season in 2018, heading home the game-winner in the NCAA First Round match at No. 25 Clemson.
ย
A Second Team All-SEC honoree in both of her first two seasons, Foster has amassed 20 goals in her career heading into her junior campaign, ranking second on the team with eight scores in 2018. The Graves County, Kentucky native turned things on once the Rebels hit league play, finding the back of the net five times in SEC action to rank third in the conference. Foster burst onto the scene with 12 goals as a freshman, the most among all SEC rookies.
ย
Playing in her first collegiate season in 2018, Haleigh Stackpole quickly cemented herself as a starting XI staple, starting in all 22 matches while logging the second most minutes on the team at 1,850. A box-to-box player in the middle of the park, Stackpole saved her five goals scored for the most important moments, registering four game-winning goals, including the lone tally in Ole Miss' upset of SEC regular season champion and then No. 7 Vanderbilt.
ย
Ole Miss commences the regular season on Thursday, welcoming North Alabama to the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. showdown in Oxford. The Rebels will conclude the opening week of the season on the road, making the quick trip north Sunday for the annual derby against Memphis.
