Four Rebels in the Top-20 Individually After 18 Holes
WOLCOTT, Colo. – The Ole Miss women's golf team sits in a tie for first place after the first 18 holes on Monday at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colorado.
Four Rebels are in the top-20 individually, led by freshman Andrea Lingnell, who is in a tie for seventh overall.
The Rebels fired a 7-under 281, the fifth-lowest single round total in program history and are one of just four teams in red figures after the first day at Red Sky Golf Club. Ole Miss, starting on No. 10, were 2-over through their first nine holes, but turned it around on the front side of the course with a 9-under team performance, including 11 birdies.
Ole Miss leads the field in total birdies with 21 and are the only team who went under-par on the par 4s, going 4-under.
"I'm really proud of the fight our team had today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We made a few course management errors on our front nine and bounced back with a 9-under team score on our back nine. Overall, it was a great start to the tournament."
Lignell opened up with a new career-low round, firing a 3-under 69. The freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden, birdied two of her first three holes and went bogey-free until her first miscue at No. 18. She put together a string of birdies on No. 2 and 3 before making pars the rest of the way.
Lignell leads the team with 13 pars and played the par 4s a 1-under and the par 3s at 2-under.
Julia Johnson shot her fourth round at par-or-better this season after a first round 2-under 70 and is tied for 11th. The junior led the team in birdies with six and went bogey-free on the front nine.
Pi-Lillebi Hermansson matched her fellow teammate with a 2-under 70 of her own, which marked back-to-back tournaments for the senior where she opened with an under-par round. Hermansson is second on the team in birdies with five.
Kennedy Swann finished her round strong with a string of birdies on No. 8 and 9 to finish with an even-par 72. Swann almost made an ace on No. 8 and her tap in birdie pushed the Rebels into a tie for first at the end of her round.
Chiara Tamburlini, a freshman from St. Gallen, Switzerland, made her Rebel debut, shooting a 7-over 79. Ellen Hutchinson-Kay, playing as an individual, shot a first round 1-under 71 and is tied for 19th.
The second round is set for Tuesday morning with tee times for Ole Miss starting at 12:39 p.m. CT. The Rebels will be paired with Pepperdine and host Denver.
