Ole Miss Head Soccer Coach Recaps Mississippi State and Auburn, Previews Arkansas

Ole Miss Soccer Head Coach Matt Mott met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach Mott recapped this past week's tie with Mississippi State and win over Auburn before previewing Arkansas.

Opening Statement
"It was a good weekend for us. We had the Magnolia Cup challenge down at Mississippi State. Ended the game 1-1. We took an early lead on a goal from Haleigh Stackpole. Then we battled. They scored just before halftime, then we battled it out into double overtime. We were able to keep the cup, which is huge, and earn a point down there in a 1-1 draw to and stay undefeated in league play.

"Yesterday, we came out in really extreme temperatures against a good Auburn team. Auburn was coming in 2-0 in league play. Channing Foster scored on a really good assist from Jenna Kemp and Lonnie Mulligan to beat Auburn in overtime 1-0. I'm really happy with the way the team is defending. We've only given up one goal to Missouri, one to State, and zero to Auburn yesterday.

"Three overtime matches in league play and we're undefeated, so we've defended really well. Ashley Orkus is playing great in goal. Grace Johnson, Madison Smith, Maddy Houghton and Sydney Michalak have been doing a great job. Julia Phillips at midfield is really playing at a high level. We're going to need that certainly this week as we head into Arkansas.

"Arkansas is in the top 15 in the country. They have played their last eight games and given up only one goal and scored 25. They are a potent team and they aren't giving up goals. Really a tough opponent for us on the road, but our team is in a good spot and excited for this challenge. The SEC is not getting any easier, but it's a one-game weekend for us, with just Arkansas. Then we have the weekend off."

On the Five OT games (3 in a row) taking a toll on the team…
"Yes, it absolutely does. The great thing for this team this year is that we are deep. That's why we've won three of them and tied the other two. The depth of our team is really helping us in all of these games. It certainly was a huge factor yesterday in the heat. We played 19 players, which is massive. There have been years past where we only played 13, so to be able to go that deep is huge for us.  Quite honestly, we scored that goal because Lonnie Mulligan was fresh enough at the end to chase down a ball that was probably 90-10 them, but she was able to just out run the defender. The player she out ran was a national team player from Auburn. Lonnie won the ball from her then played Channing, and Channing had a great strike. So, our depth has been huge for sure."
