Swann Shoots Career-low 66 in Second Round to Lead Rebels
ALBUQURQUE, N.M. – The Ole Miss women's golf team is in third place after the first 36 holes Monday at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Rebels fired a 5-under 283 in the first round and followed that up with an even par round in the afternoon. Ole Miss is second in the field in total birdies with 30. The Rebels were 7-under as a team on par 5s. All five players are averaging par or under on the longest holes on the course.
"Today was a great way to start the season for the Rebs," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We had several under-par rounds and really did a great job working together as a team. Overall, we played steady golf and we look to finish strong tomorrow."
Kennedy Swann is the top Rebel on the leaderboard. Her day was highlighted by a career-low 6-under 66 in the second round. The senior shot 5-over 77 in the morning, but bounced back on the second 18, going 6-under in her first six holes before making pars the rest of the way to shoot a 66. Swann moved up 58 spots in the afternoon and is tied for tenth overall.
"After the first 18, I knew I needed to make something happen," Swann said. "Coach Kory pushed me to play better than I had the first round, so I tried to simplify everything.
"I got off to a hot start. I was 6-under through six. At that point, it was almost comical how I had started. The goal once I settled in and made a few pars was to have no bogeys the rest of the way. I couldn't have had this round without Kory and am really looking forward to tomorrow."
Swann wasn't the only Rebel to shoot a career-low today. Pi-Lillebi Hermansson started off the morning with a 5-under 67 with eight birdies. The senior ended her first round with six birdies in her last 11 holes. Hermansson is tied for 42nd overall after a second round 10-over 82.
Julia Johnson continued her consistent play from last season with back-to-back even par 72s. The junior was 3-under on the par 5s today, including birdies on No. 14 both rounds.
Andrea Lignell started off her college career with a 1-under 71. The freshman followed up with a 4-over 76 in the afternoon and is tied for 25th overall. Lignell is second on the team in pars with 23.
Ellen Hutchinson-Kay joined her fellow Swede on the leaderboard tied for 25th overall. The sophomore went 73-74 on Monday and birdied the par 4 second hole in the morning, one of just 13 birdies on the day on No. 2.
The final round begins Tuesday morning with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start.
