Rebel Guard One of 30 Candidates Nationwide up for Men’s Basketball Honor
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Ole Miss men's basketball senior guard Breein Tyree was named one of 30 candidates for the 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award on Friday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Tyree, one of five SEC men's basketball candidates, has been a leader on and off the court. As a sophomore, he earned a leadership role within the conference by being named Vice-Chair of the SEC Men's Basketball Leadership Council. He has headed the council as chair for the past two years. Tyree, the lone senior on the team, also serves on the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on campus as a voice for Rebel athletes.
The Somerset, N.J. native has been active in the Oxford community since becoming a Rebel. For the past two years, he has met with patients from LeBonheur Children's Hospital and fulfill their wishes to interview a basketball player. This past fall, Tyree encouraged his fellow students to show up to The Pavilion and help the Rebels #SinkCancer, an initiative that made head coach Kermit Davis pay for every free throw and half-court shot made by students. The event raised more than $10,000 in its first year, a check Coach Davis wrote to the American Cancer Society.
In the classroom, Tyree was named Ole Miss M-Club Student-Athlete of the month to kick off 2019. He also earned a spot on the Dean's Honor Roll (3.5-3.74 GPA) during the fall of 2018.
On the court, Tyree has led Ole Miss as the lone senior on the team. He is averaging a team-high 17.8 ppg, including 26.5 ppg in SEC play to top the conference. Tyree is the first Rebel to score at least 25 points in each of the first two league games since Joe Harvell (1992). He has recorded eight 20-point games this season, including a career-high 34-point outburst in a win over Middle Tennessee (Dec. 14). Tyree currently ranks 15th on the Rebels all-time scoring list with a strong chance to crack the top 10 by season's end.
The candidates will be narrowed to a field of 10 finalists in February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition.
