No. 23 Shockers Snap Ole Miss’ Winning Streak

1/4/2020 | Men's Basketball

Rebels Fall 74-54 on the Road

WICHITA, Kan. – The Ole Miss men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on the road Saturday afternoon. Behind 29 points from Erik Stevenson, No. 23 Wichita State protected its home floor to hand the Rebels (9-4) a 74-54 setback at Charles Koch Arena.

Devontae Shuler and Khadim Sy scored 12 points apiece to pace Ole Miss. Both Rebels pulled down a team-high five rebounds as well. On the defensive side of the floor, Sy recorded a career-high three blocks and Shuler added a pair of steals. Sy produced his sixth straight double-digit scoring game. As a team, the Rebels knocked down 18 of 23 (78.3 percent) from the free throw line.

Winning their seventh in a row, the Shockers (13-1) outscored Ole Miss 20-1 in points off turnovers. Following Stevenson's big night, Jamarius Burton added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Ole Miss had to deal with foul trouble to a pair of key players early in the ballgame. KJ Buffen picked up two fouls 90 seconds into the contest, having to make an early trip to the bench for nine minutes of game time. A second personal foul was assessed to Breein Tyree with 12:49 left in the first half, forcing the Rebels' leading scorer out of the game.

A five-minute Ole Miss scoring drought allowed Wichita State to go on a 10-0 run, turning a 19-15 game into a 14-point cushion. Stevenson sparked the spurt, scoring seven of those 10 points. Behind his 19 points over the first 20 minutes, the home team took a 39-24 lead into the break.

Ole Miss got within 13 at the beginning of the second half, but the first half deficit proved too much to overcome with Wichita State increasing its advantage down the stretch. Shuler and Sy tallied eight points apiece in the second half to get into double figures, but it was not enough against a solid Wichita State team.

After closing out non-conference play against the nationally-ranked Shockers, the Rebels remain on the road to begin SEC play. Ole Miss heads to College Station, Texas to face the Texas A&M Aggies (Jan. 7). Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
