Rebels Won all Three Doubles Matches Against Mississippi State and Alabama Opponents

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Ole Miss women's tennis won seven total matches, including a sweep in three doubles contests, at a strong start to the Hail State Classic on Friday.

The Rebels started off in dominant fashion in doubles for the second straight week, sweeping all three of its matches. Tiphanie Fiquet and Kelsey Mize won first, defeating Alabama's Sasha Gorchanyuk and Anna Parkhomenko, 6-1, in less than one hour of match time. In a battle of underclassmen duos, the Ole Miss team of Lillian Gabrielsen and Reka Zafori defeated the Bulldog's top-ranked doubles player, Tamara Racine and her partner Marta Falceto, 6-3.

While Ole Miss made quick work in its first two doubles matches, the battle between Alexa Bortles and Sabina Machalova and Alabama's Anne Marie Hiser and Sidney Riley came down to the wire in a back-and-forth match. The Rebels broke Riley's serve at 5-5, putting Bortles in position to serve for the match. After Alabama fended off two match points, Machalova hit the decisive backhand volley winner at 40-40 to seal a 7-5 victory for Ole Miss.

In the first round of singles matches on Friday, Rebel newcomer Eesha Gudiseva won her debut match, 6-4, 6-3, over Alabama freshman Sydney Orefice. Likewise, Machalova continued her early season success in the first singles portion, overcoming a one-set hole to defeat MSU's Alexandra Mikhailuk, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4).

All seven active Rebels competed in the later session of singles matches to conclude a full day of action in Starkville, winning two contests in the latter session. Fiquet started hot versus Mikhailuk, dominating the first set 6-1, and ultimately winning 6-1, 6-4. In similar fashion, Bortles defeated her opponent, Alabama's Moka Ito, 6-1 in the first set. In a close second set, Bortles outlasted Ito 7-3 in the tiebreak to claim a straight-set victory for a final of 6-1, 7-6 (3).
