Soccer Screams Back for Dramatic Senior Day Win

10/31/2020 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. – On a night where goals were flying in for both sides, Ole Miss got the last laugh on Saturday, overcoming multiple deficits and scoring in the final minute to defeat No. 14 Georgia 4-3 on Senior Day at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

Before the festivities began, Ole Miss celebrated the career of senior Chanel Thomas, sending the Scottsdale, Arizona, native out in style on a chilly night filled with plenty of heat.

Channing Foster provided the dramatics in the waning moments, using her deadly left foot to bury a free kick opportunity in the 90th minute. Madisyn Pezzino pulled the Rebels back from a one-goal deficit not once, but twice, and Haleigh Stackpole bagged her first goal of the season in the come-from-behind victory.

Statistically the match was as tight as the action suggested, with Georgia (2-3-2) narrowly outshooting Ole Miss (3-4-0) 13-11, with the Rebels holding a 9-8 advantage in shots on frame. Between the posts, both Ole Miss' Ashley Orkus and Georgia's Emory Wegener registered five saves.

While the Rebels looked dangerous attacking in the opening minutes of the match, it was Georgia who garnered an early lead. Taking advantage of a free kick, Ashley Andersen got behind the defense and on the end of Jessica Denney's service, heading past Orkus to put the Bulldogs on top 1-0 in the 11th minute.

A few minutes later, another header proved lethal for Georgia. This time the service came on a cross from the wing by Mallie Mckenzie, with Delaney Erwin beating Orkus to the near post in the 19th minute.

However, the Rebels kept their nerve and battled back. A wonderful solo effort from Stackpole got the Rebels on the board, with the box-to-box midfielder first dribbling to the left before circling back to the right and unleashing a sumptuous strike to the far post, scoring from about 20 yards out to make it 2-1 in the 29th minute.

Not long after, the Rebs clawed back again to tie the score at 2-2. Orkus came all the way from her goal into the attacking half of the field to take a free kick. The Rebel keeper's ball over the top was true, with Molly Martin flicking it on and into the path of Pezzino, who squeezed a shot across Wegener and inside the far post.

With momentum fully swung, the two sides hit halftime deadlocked at two goals apiece. Both sides came out of the break flying back-and-forth, but couldn't quite connect the dots to build an effective attack.

In the 63rd minute, the Bulldogs recaptured the lead. Mckenzie again provided the assist, sending the ball into the box to meet Mollie Belisle. Belisle brought the ball down, turned and fired into the left side of goal, giving Orkus no chance to save.

With time remaining growing short, things began to look dire for the Rebels. It looked as though Ole Miss may have missed its chance in the 81st minute as Pezzino's volley on a bouncing ball in the box sailed over the goal mouth, instead, the dramatics were just beginning.

Pezzino made no mistake a few short minutes later, nearly replicating her first goal identically. Orkus again sent in a free kick for Martin, who flick the ball on for the New York native. Pezzino met the ball in stride, volleying it in with her left from right at the six-yard box. However, Ole Miss was still not satisfied.

With Georgia committing a foul just outside the 18-yard box, the Rebels remained calm with plenty of time to set up the crucial moment. Foster and Stackpole stood over the ball and after the latter feigned a shot with her right to move Wegener off her mark, Foster unleashed a sweet strike with her left, perfectly picking out the far corner to secure the late-game winner and pick up three crucial points in the SEC standings.

Ole Miss will look to keep the momentum going into the regular season finale, heading to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt on Saturday, Nov. 7 before preparing for the following week's SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama.
