Ole Miss Head Soccer Coach Recaps Mississippi State, Previews Auburn

Ole Miss Soccer Head Coach Matt Mott met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach Mott recapped this past week's loss to Mississippi State before previewing the next match at Auburn.

Opening Statement…
"First of all, congrats to coach Vanhoy. A great result down there in the race for sure. They're off and rolling like they always are, just a really impressive group. And certainly, congratulations to Coach Kiffin on his first Ole Miss win. That was pretty exciting on Saturday.

"We obviously had a disappointing result on Friday night versus Mississippi State. It's the first time in seven games that we haven't walked away with the trophy, so that was disappointing. The game was really interesting. I think they scored a kind of fluky goal on a corner that we didn't do a good enough job on and then we really dominated the game. I think the stats would tell you, our expected goals or analytics would tell you that we should've scored about three goals in the game. For whatever reason there is a cover on the goal for us and we've got to knock it off and find a way to find the back of the net. I think we're defending really well. We defended well against LSU and we defended again really well against Mississippi State. Just can't find it on the other end for whatever reason.

"I just walked in from practice; it was a very spirited practice as you would think after a game like that. The girls are hungry and wanting to play. Unfortunately, right now, Auburn has some COVID issues. We play them next. We were supposed to play them on Sunday but that game won't be played on Sunday. So were waiting to see when the new game will be. Hopefully somewhere close to after Sunday we will play.

"Auburn is a good team, loaded with talent. Unfortunately for them, they've only played one game. Their second game was supposed to be against Texas A&M and A&M had COVID issues, and then they were supposed to play this past weekend against LSU and weren't able to play that because of the COVID problems they're having. We're hoping we get the game in here soon after Sunday and be able to get back rolling.

"We were certainly disappointed in the results from Friday, but I think we have some things we can fix and hopefully start scoring some goals."

On dealing with issues surrounding COVID-19…
It's tricky because you just don't know. We don't know if we have everybody until we test on Thursday. Friday morning at 6:30 my trainer texts me and said we're all clear. Even with your own team, you're waiting. it's a very difficult situation I think, but we're really glad that we're playing.
