Rebels Set to Compete at Vanderbilt for Three Days of Hidden Dual Matches
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss heads to the Music City to kickoff the fall season against SEC foes Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Auburn. The Rebels will compete in head-to-head matches against all three schools starting this Friday and ending on Sunday.
The Commodore Invitational is the first of three fall tournaments for the Rebels during the month of October. This weekend will mark the first competitive match for the team since dueling Tennessee on March 8. Ole Miss will be competing in the maximum number of tournaments under current SEC COVID-19 guidelines for fall events.
About the Rebels
Ole Miss women's tennis returns seven student-athletes and welcomes four newcomers (three freshmen and one transfer). In a shortened season, Coach Mark Beyers led the team to a 9-5 record last spring. The team ranked as high as No. 24 in the national ITA rankings and ended the season ranked No. 29.
Despite the shortened season due to COVID-19, the Rebels put together a solid campaign. Most notably, on Feb. 21 the Rebels upset No. 14 UCF, 4-3, in a road matchup. Ole Miss was also 7-3 at home, sweeping four opponents at Palmer/Salloum Tennis Facility. Additionally, seven Ole Miss women's tennis student-athletes earned ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction.
Scouting the Field
The Commodore Invitational will provide a preview for Ole Miss standard intraconference duals in the spring. Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Auburn ranked top-50 in the final ITA rankings last spring with the Commodores and Volunteers within the top-25. In the final rankings, all three programs had a top-15 ranked doubles pairing. The top-ranked singles competitor this weekend is Vanderbilt's Christina Rosca, who finished No. 18 in the final ITA spring poll.
