Suber Goes Low, Climbs Leaderboard on Moving Day

Sophomore Fires a 65, Rebels Remain in Seventh with 18 Holes to Play

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – One day after carding a season-low 67, Jackson Suber played even better. The 2020 PING Southeast All-Region golfer matched his career best, firing a 65 (-5) on the second day of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club.

Shooting his low for the sixth time in his career, Suber vaulted up the individual leaderboard into third place. Meanwhile, the Ole Miss men's golf team remained in seventh at even par following a second round 281 (+1).

"We had a great opportunity to really make a run up the leaderboard today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Unfortunately, we let it slip away from us midway through our round. I was proud of the way that these guys hung in there and fought to pick up a couple of strokes on a tough finishing stretch. Hopefully we can get out early tomorrow, see some putts fall and gain some momentum to finish this tournament on a high note."

For the second straight day, Suber led the way. He got going right from the start with a birdie at the 410-yard opening hole before adding a deuce at the par 3 third. His lone bogey of the day came on No. 7, sending the sophomore out in 34 (-1). Suber began the back with a birdie followed by back-to-back birdies at the 13th and 14th. Taking advantage of one of only two par 5s on the course, he added his sixth birdie of the round with one on No. 16. A bogey-free final 11 holes kept Suber within striking distance of medalist honors at 8-under, just three strokes behind the leaders with 18 holes remaining.

"It has been great to see Suber play well these last two days," said Malloy. "I know that he expects to compete to win each and every time out, and he is certainly showing that this week."

Three Rebels shot 72 (+2) to complete the team's second round total. Veeti Mahonen matched Suber with six birdies throughout the day, but a double bogey on No. 11 and a triple bogey on No. 12 prevented the freshman from signing for an under-par round. He finished strong with birdies on two over the final three holes.

Brett Schell and Sarut Vongchaisit were grinding all day long, combining for 29 pars. Schell recorded a team-high 15 pars, and his lone birdie came at the par 5 second. Vongchaisit made 14 pars during his round, while finding a birdie on No. 10.

The Rebels will wrap up their fall with tomorrow's final round. Ole Miss' tee times begin at 8 a.m. CT alongside Arkansas (E) and Florida (+1). Vanderbilt (-18) leapfrogged Georgia (-16) to grab the clubhouse lead heading into the last day.
