Ole Miss Head Soccer Coach Recaps Vanderbilt, Previews SEC Tournament
Ole Miss Soccer Head Coach Matt Mott met with members of the media on Monday as part of his weekly press conference. Coach Mott recapped this past week's match at No. 13 Vanderbilt before previewing the SEC Tournament.
Opening Statement…
"Another exciting Saturday night for us in soccer. We went up to Vandy to take on the Commodores with seeding in mind, where we were going to be seeded for the SEC Tournament, trying to get points obviously and finish on a high. We were able to beat them 2-1 on two late goals after the 86th minute and got the second one in overtime, it was a good game.
"We gave up a goal early and then really battled. I thought for most parts of the game, we were the better side, certainly in the second half. We had a ball, Lucy Green served it in and the goalkeeper got a hand on it but couldn't catch it, and it fell right to Ramsey Davis, who knocked it in for us. So that was a good goal for us in the 86th minute.
"We got the match to overtime and then got a free kick at about midfield and Ashley Orkus played a really good ball in to Molly Martin. And you know, we're talking about Ashley with these assists and doing such a good job, but a big part of it is Molly. Molly is battling through double teams and getting her head on stuff and flicking. She flicks it into traffic, and Channing Foster is first to it and redirects it on the goal, and we score. Just a great goal in overtime. But a lot of these goals are coming off Molly, she's really working to get her head on them and really out-jumping and out-battling people.
"But I'm really happy with the group as we get ready for the beach. We don't know where our seeding is yet. There's one game left to be made up today between Texas A&M and Auburn, and that will determine where we are seeded. If A&M wins the game, we'll be seeded sixth. If they tie, we'll be eighth, and if Auburn wins, we will be seventh. So, it just kind of depends… We did have the fifth-most points in the league this year, but with tiebreakers and everything else, that's kind of where we sit. So, we could be sixth, seventh or eighth heading to The Beach. We're excited to get down there. We'll leave this Friday after a full week of practice and head down there."
